My well-travelled ass has rampaged through many, many big cities over the years – but few are as perfect as Melbourne, Victoria.
It’s a perfect blend of old-style architecture and modern buildings and boasts some of the best sporting venues anywhere in the world. The Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) alone is worth the visit – a 100,000 capacity cricket ground? That’s bonkers, even more so when you stand at its gates and take in the sheer scale of it.
Perhaps best of all about Melbourne is the City Tram system. Journeys on the city centre Circle Tram are entirely free, which is a brilliant touch by Melbourne’s tourism chiefs. It doesn’t take that long to go round the entire loop and you can, of course, hop off whenever you spot something that you want to get a closer look at. And you will see a lot of shit that’ll make you want to get off!
The trams themselves, if you’re into that kind of thing, are old-fashioned and quaint, which adds to the experience.
North Melbourne is a fantastic location, with a huge midweek outdoor flea market one of the very best attractions.
The Eureka Skydeck 88 is a must-see and the street food outlets hit the spot when you need to refuel.
Put Melbourne on your bucket list. You’ll not regret it.
